Zimbabwe has announced that it intends to add up to 4600 MW of power capacity by 2030 in an attempt to address chronic electricity shortages across the country, meet rising demand, and strengthen energy security.

The country’s power mix is expected to shift towards renewable energy, with the National Energy Compact specifying a target of an increase in renewable capacity from 1282 MW in 2024 to 2640 MW by 2030. Renewables are projected to account for nearly 50 per cent of Zimbabwe’s total installed capacity of 5432 MW by 2030.

Zimbabwe plans to achieve 100 per cent household electricity access by 2030, up from 41 per cent in 2024. The electrification programme includes around 1.9 million additional grid connections, supported by grid extensions, mini-grids, and standalone solar systems.
