Zambia’s ZCCM Investment Holdings and the Chinese firm Wonderful Group Services have agreed a deal to build a 600 MW coal-fired power plant in Zambia in two phases, at an estimated cost of $452 million.
Each phase will consist of 300 MW. ZCCM-IH did not provide timelines, but said the second phase would be completed within five years of the completion of the first phase.
The project will be carried out by Ever Great Energy Company, a subsidiary of Wonderful Group Services. ZCCM-IH will invest $54.2 million for a 30 per cent stake in Ever Great.
The plant is intended to reduce Zambia’s peak demand power generation shortfall of 1400 MW and reduce reliance on hydropower as drier conditions impact the performance of the country’s key electricity source, the Kariba dam.
