Xcel Energy Colorado has announced a new power plan that the utility said could save customers $215 million, cut carbon emissions by half, and increase renewable energy sources to 55 per cent of its energy portfolio by 2026. This plan has been submitted to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
The plan would retire 660 MW of coal generation from Commanche 1 and Commanche 2 plants in Pueblo and add 1100 MW of new wind capacity, 750 MW of solar generation, and 380 MW of flexible gas sources. Xcel has also asked to add 275 MW of battery storage capacity.
Xcel estimates that its plan, which must undergo public review and regulatory approval, would generate $2.5 billion in new investment across eight Colorado counties: Adams, Baca, Boulder, Kit Carson, Morgan, Park, Pueblo, and Weld.
