World Bank to provide $850 million for Tarbela Dam extension project

The World Bank has announced that it will provide $850 million for Pakistan’s Tarbela 4th Extension Project. The project is due to be completed within four years, and will add 1410 MW to the capacity of Tarbela Hydro Power Station, which will increase the total capacity of the plant to 4888 MW.

Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has said that in view of the increasing demands on water and power in the country, WAPDA will be implementing a number of projects in the two sectors. Syed Raghib Abbas, a spokesman for WAPDA, said that three projects with a cumulative generation capacity of 350 MW will be completed this year, and the 969 MW Neelum Jhelum and the 106 MW Golen Gol hydropower projects are scheduled to be completed in 2016. He also said that WAPDA was examining a number of other hydropower extension projects, including Diamer Basha, Bunji, and Dasu hydropower plants and the multipurpose dams at Munda, and Kurram Tangi.
