The World Bank has committed $265 million in financing to support Morocco’s modernisation of its hydropower facilities to respond to the challenges of water scarcity and increasing power demand. This funding represents one of the largest single investments in Moroccan hydropower infrastructure in recent years.
The initiative will focus rehabilitating existing dams and power generation facilities that have experienced declining efficiency due to age and environmental factors. Morocco’s hydropower sector has faced mounting pressure from prolonged drought conditions, reducing reservoir levels and limiting electricity generation capacity. The new investment will introduce technologies designed to maximise power output even with reduced water availability.
The project will create employment during both construction and operation, contributing to local economic development.
The World Bank said that it will provide technical expertise alongside financial resources to ensure the initiative meets international standards for environmental sustainability.
