World’s largest solar power station planned for Madhya Pradesh, India

Rajendra Shukla, Energy Minister for the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, said that the world’s largest solar power station – 750 MW – will be built in the Rewa district of the state. He said: “Global tenders for commissioning the solar power station in an area over 1500 hectares at Bandwar region in Gudh tehsil of Rewa will be invited shortly.” He said that if all goes well, the plant will start generating solar energy by March 2017.

The project, Rewa Ultra Mega Solar, is a joint venture of Solar Energy Corporation of India and MP Urja Vikas Nigam, with both parties holding a 50 per cent stake.

Nigam said that the cost of generating 1 MW of solar power is around $1.1 million.

At present, the world’s largest solar power project – Ivanah Solar Power Facility of 392 MW – is located in the Mojave Desert in California, USA.
