Data from the National Grid showed that wind and gas rose in the UK power mix in August, while coal-fired generation’s share fell to 1.5 per cent from 2.3 per cent for the same period last year. The share of power from wind rose to 13 per cent from 9.5 per cent in August of last year, while the share of gas rose from 39 per cent to 43 per cent.
Biomass-fuelled power generation accounted for 7.6 per cent in August 2018, but there were no comparable figures for 2017. The share of nuclear power remained unchanged at 30 per cent.
The UK aims to close all unabated coal-fired plants by 2025. Much of the country’s coal fleet has already been closed or converted to biomass.
