The US government has declared a short-term power grid emergency to prevent possible power outages across the Mid-Atlantic region, where the electricity grid serves about 67 million people.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has directed PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator, to activate specified power generation units and deploy backup electricity resources if necessary to maintain supply. The DOE also authorised PJM Interconnection to exceed normal pollution limits if necessary.
The grid is already under pressure, with increased electricity demand resulting from the growth of data centres and unseasonable warm weather, along with several power plants undergoing seasonal maintenance in preparation for the winter and some transmission lines out of service for repairs and safety work.
