The Caribbean Transmission Development Company (CTDC) has announced that the US Department of Energy (DOE) has granted a permit for the $2.5 billion Project Hostos to enable power to be transmitted from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico.
As part of Project Hostos, a 500 MW CCGT will be constructed in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. The power plant would send electricity through three separate power lines: a 90 km cable from the plant to the coast and a 150 km submarine cable across the Mona Passage linking the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico. The final power line link is a 6 km cable from the port of Mayaguez in Puerto Rico to connect to the national grid.
The project is scheduled to be operational by 2031.
CTDC will now move forward with other permits and a PPA with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA).
