The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has repealed its greenhouse gas emission requirements for US power plants enacted under President Biden. It also proposes rescinding every remaining greenhouse gas emissions standard for the power sector.

The EPA said that it does not have the authority to regulate power plant greenhouse gases for the purpose of addressing climate change. It said: “Our models show that GHG emissions from power plants have no material impact on climate change.”

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has contradicted this latter claim, saying: “Human activities, primarily the human burning of fossil fuels, have warmed Earth’s surface and its ocean basins, which in turn have continued to impact Earth’s climate.”

Michelle Bloodworth, CEO of America’s Power, which represents the American coal industry, praised the actions of the Trump Administration. “Restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to being illegal, would have left electricity providers with just two options: shutter their coal plants by 2032 or comply with unrealistic carbon standards.”
