Russia targeted and damaged energy infrastructure across several regions of Ukraine as part of its invasion of the country, resulting in the loss of around 1 GW of energy production capacity.
Three Russian drones struck the 5.9MWe, 14 MWth Clear Energy biomass CHP plant in the Chernihiv region. This facility was Ukraine’s first large-scale biomass plant, commissioned in 2016. Russia’s latest attacks suggest an emerging pattern of targeting smaller power plants.
Overall, it has been estimated that Ukraine has lost around 1 GW of capacity that will be difficult to replace quickly. As a result, Ukraine will experience rolling blackouts across the country.
Roman Andarak, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy, has expressed his appreciation for ongoing allied support and communicated the urgent requirements facing the country’s energy sector.
