Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s Energy Minister, has announced that the country is launching the next stage of a competition to build over 1.5 GW of new flexible power generation capacity. He said that the Ukraine government is now seeking comments and proposals from potential investors on the prepared tender documentation.
The competition covers the commissioning of 1505 MW of new flexible power generation in Ukraine’s most energy-deficient regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions, as well as the city of Kyiv.
Shmyhal said that Ukraine will offer investors a mechanism to compensate for possible differences in electricity prices during peak demand hours. It is also studying the possibility of insuring war-related risks, including the destruction or damage of equipment, through a de-risking mechanism developed by the Energy Community Secretariat.
The government said that it expects the full capacity planned under the second stage to be commissioned by the end of 2027.
