The UK set a new national record for wind generation, with windfarms generating nearly 20 GW during a 30-minute period on 26 October. The 19 936 MW of generated electricity accounted for 52 per cent of total energy demand, according to the National Grid .

While the generation was the record for the UK over a 30-minute period, the highest percentage of electricity generated by wind remains 64 per cent, set on 29 January 2022.

The UK Government has recently outlined plans in its Energy Security Strategy. This proposes increasing the UK 2030 target for installed offshore wind capacity from 40 GW to 50 GW, with up to 5 GW coming from floating offshore wind.

Dan McGrail, Chief Executive of RenewableUK , said: “It’s important to speed up and scale up the amount of onshore and offshore wind capacity we are installing; to boost out energy security and to reduce electricity bills for consumers, as new wind projects generate electricity cheaper than any other source.”
