It is expected that the UK Government will announce on 13 November that Wylfa on the island of Anglesey off the north Wales coast will host Britain’s first commercial SMRs, winning out over the rival Oldbury in Gloucestershire, England.
Wylfa will be chosen to host three SMRs from Rolls-Royce , each SMR having a capacity of 480 MW. The Rolls-Royce design has won out over a US consortium of Westinghouse and Bechtel which proposed a plant using Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactor technology.
Rolls-Royce has estimated that the Wylfa SMR project will support 3000 jobs during the peak construction period.
Llinos Medi, Plaid Cymru MP for the local Ynys Môn constituency, said: “We await further details. This is a real opportunity to deliver a transformative project that strengthens energy security and benefits local communities, while fully respecting the island’s environment, culture, and Welsh language. I look forward to continuing to work to ensure it is the most suitable project possible.”
