According to Montel Group ’s latest GB Electricity Market Summary, CCGT generation in the UK increased by 44 per cent year-on-year for Q1 2025, averaging 8.6 GW.
This increase was the result of reduced wind output and an increase in demand. The increase was most marked in January and February, when calm, cold conditions created peak demand for gas. Domestic electricity demand rose 2.7 per cent year-on-year.
The report also highlighted increased electricity imports from France and the Netherlands.
The report’s summary said that the UK power system was balancing volatility in both supply and demand. It concluded: “The market remains delicately balanced with gas continuing to play a critical role in bridging the gap during periods of renewabl;e underperformance.”
