TerraPower wins approval to build commercial SMR in USA

TerraPower , a US SMR company backed by SK Innovation and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), has received approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build a commercial nuclear power plant.

This is the first time in 10 years that the NRC has authorised construction of a new commercial nuclear power plant. It is also the first approval in the US for an SMR.

TerraPower will construct the plant in the state of Wyoming, with the objective of bringing a demonstration reactor online by 2030. The reactor will use liquid sodium cooling technology.
