Tata Power Co., India's largest private sector power utility, plans to build power generation plants in Indonesia and Africa to help offset its difficult business environment in India, according to Managing Director Anil Sardana.

The company is seeking to build power projects in Africa through expanding its existing projects in the region, Sardana has revealed.

Tata Group operates in Africa through its subsidiary, Tata Africa Holdings, and already has significant presence.

Tata Power and other Indian utilities are trying to boost their overseas businesses, primarily through infrastructure developments like acquiring coal mines or setting up power plants. India's electricity generation business is being crippled by fuel shortages and difficulties in getting land and environmental clearances.

Sardana did not disclose where in Africa the company is planning to set up power plants, or give further details on similar Tata projects in other areas.
