Tanzania suffered a major power outage across large areas of the country on 27 June due to a technical failure in its national electricity grid.
The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) said that the disruption was triggered by simultaneous failures in three power transmission lines alongside a malfunction in a single generation unit.
Lazaro Twange, MD of Tanesco, formally apologised for the incident and explained that investigations during the restoration process identified concurrent faults. He said that Tanesco is in the process of executing multiple strategic initiatives to reinforce the National Grid infrastructure, upgrading transmission and distribution systems.
Despite the disruption, overall power generation capacity is approximately 4400 MW, sufficient to meet national demand.
