Taiwan has approved a preliminary plan to restart the Maanshan nuclear power plant, a reversal of the government’s policy as the country looks to improve its energy security. Maanshan has two units, each of 951 MW for a combined capacity of 1902 MW. The units were shut down in 2024 and 2025.

Taiwan’s Nuclear Safety Commission has approved an initial proposal to restart the plant. Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) will still need to carry out follow-up work, including safety inspections, before submitting another report on implementation for review.

Kung Ming-hsin, Taiwan’s Economic Minister, said that the earliest the plant might start operations is 2028.

In an island-wide referendum in August 2025, about 75 per cent of those who voted supported the reopening of Maanshan, although the result was ultimately discounted due to insufficient turnout.
