Summit Power, the biggest IPP in Bangladesh, has inaugurated its 21st power plant in Gazipur, Bangladesh, capable of generating 464 MW. With the addition of Gazipur I and II, Summit Power’s total generating capacity increased to 2045 MW.
The Gazipur I and II Power Plant is located at Kodda in Gazipur. It will supply power to Tongi and Kaliakair grid sub-stations.
Muhammed Aziz Khan, Chairman of Summit Power, said that the company now supplies 15 per cent of the electricity to the national grid. He said: “We will continue to contribute generating electricity for the country and fulfil the national demand.”
The Summit Gazipur I & II Power Ltd was implemented as a fast-track project within nine months, a period set by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and the Power Division of the Ministry and Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources.
Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Energy Advisor to the Bangladesh Prime Minister, said: “Currently, 22,000 MW is supplied across the country, half of which is generated from the private sector. The private sector, especially Summit Group, has played a significant role in developing the power sector.” According to 2018 statistics from the Power Division, the country’s total power generation capacity reached 20,343 MW, of which 11,057 MW came from private sector producers.
