The South Korea Government has conducted a research study that has concluded that five power generation companies under Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) – East-West, Southeast, Southern, Western, and Central power companies – should be merged into a single firm. The government will draw up a restructuring plan in July.
Kim Sung-hwan, South Korea’s Energy and Environment Minister, said: “The research found that merging the five power companies into one is the most efficient approach for the energy transition, and also the best option in terms of job security for power company workers.”
Kim said: “Following this interim report, we will gather various opinions, finalise the plan, and prepare a special law for the transition of power generation companies. We will ensure that the merger of power generation companies becomes a cornerstone of the great energy transition.”
