Korea East-West Power (EWP) with Dongseo Power and Hyundai Motor have launched a real-time control demonstration project at its Ulsan Power Headquarters, where it will combine a 1 MW hydrogen fuel cell to a 0.5 MW solar PV system to manage renewable intermittency.

The pilot project will test rapid load-following capability in order to balance output as solar generation fluctuates.

EWP said that unlike conventional hydrogen fuel cells that run at fixed outputs, this system uses adaptive software controls from Dongseo Power and vehicle-derived rapid-response modules from Hyundai Motor to fine-tune performance. The platform adjusts fuel-cell output based on real-time solar generation and grid needs.

Um Sang-min, head of EWP’s Future Technology Convergence Centre, said: “The task is to develop core technology for hydrogen fuel cell operation that can be used as a flexible power source in distributed energy projects.”
