In the 12 months up to April 2026, solar power generated 1727 TWh across Asia, compared to the 1711 TWh generated by gas across Asia over the same period.

Asia is generating four times as much solar electricity in Asia as it did in 2020, and the region has supplied about 60 per cent of the world’s solar growth over that period. China has led that expansion, contributing nearly 75 per cent of the growth, and its solar capacity has reached 1.2 TW.

By contrast, gas growth has fallen short of earlier expectations. Supply disruptions, elevated LNG costs, and delivery disruptions have all constrained expansion, even as Asia’s electricity demand continues to rise.
