According to a report by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Russia will build eight new nuclear power plants in Iran.
Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI) said that four of the planned reactors will be constructed in the southern province Bushehr. Eslami said that Iran’s goal was to triple its nuclear generation capacity as part of its energy development plan. He said that expanding nuclear power was essential to diversify Iran’s energy mix and meet future electricity demand.
Russia previously completed the Bushehr nuclear power plant in May 2011.
