Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation has said that, because of the opportunities offered in India green energy sector, it is planning to enter the country’s renewable energy sector.
Rosatom, through its unit JSC OTEK, is likely to acquire wind energy projects in India. Rosatom, which has a partnership with the state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu, is also planning to set up small hydropower projects in the country.
Rosatom is said to be looking at how to go about its plans in India, which includes acquisition of wind power assets. Rosatom’s India strategy follows the US withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement on the grounds that the agreement “favoured India and China and was unfair to the USA.” A spokesman for OTEK said: “We are sure that the Indian renewable energy market has great potential, and opens up good opportunities for collaboration.”
India has an ambitious target of adding 175 GW of clean energy by 2022, and several overseas firms have set up operations in the country. Of the total capacity targeted, 60 GW is due to come from wind power.
