Romania’s Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan said that the country is negotiating with the European Commission to delay shutting down 2.6 GW of coal-fired power generation by at least five years. The Government had committed to phasing out lignite and hard coal from 2026 under its EU-funded recovery aid package.
State-owned lignite power holding company CE Oltenia has partnered with three private companies – OMV Petrom , Tinmar , and Alro Slatina – to build solar plants and gas-fired power plants to replace coal assets, but the projects will be completed later than expected.
Ivan said Romania will send the EU a study showing the negative impact on the economy and power market that will be triggered by shutting down coal assets by 2026. He added that Romania will add 12.96 GW of new gas, nuclear, wind, and solar power capacity by 2023, including 2.25 GW in storage capacity.
