Romania is in negotiations with the EU to delay the planned retirement of 2.6 GW of coal-fired power generation by at least five years.
While Romania uses a variety of power generation sources, it still relies heavily on the coal sector to meet the majority of its energy demand.
Bogdan Ivan, Romania’s Energy Minister, said: “We are having fairly intense negotiations to postpone the deadline by at least five years, a realistic deadline for when we will connect new gas-fired energy units.”
The request is as a result of the slow progress the country has made in adopting new forms of energy generation.
Romania plans to use EU funds to add 12.96 GW of new gas, nuclear, wind, and solar power units by 2032.
