The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed the operating licence for Duke Energy ’s 759 MW Robinson Nuclear Plant in Hartsville, South Carolina for an additional 20 years.
This will extend the ability of the plant to operate until 2050. Duke Energy said that it had spent $1.7 billion in equipment upgrades to ensure that the plant could operate successfully and safely for an additional 20 years.
Robinson is the second Duke Energy nuclear facility to receive approval for licence renewal, following Oconee in 2025. Duke Energy plans to seek licence renewals for all of its 11 operating nuclear units.
Steven Capps, Chief Nuclear Officer for Duke Energy, said: “Extending the operating life of this proven asset helps us deliver low-cost, always-on electricity for customers while supporting jobs and energy security for the region.”
