Ontario Power Generation has told the Canadian Ministry of Environment that there are additional costs and risks if low- and medium-level nuclear waste has to be shipped from Bruce Power to an alternative storage site.
Catherine McKenna, Minister of the Environment, wanted OPG to study alternate sites before ruling on the planned Deep Geologic Repository to be built at Bruce Power.
Fred Kuntz from OPG said that risks are higher at alternate locations. He said: “There’s additional risk in handling and road safety for the additional trucking required to move this waste 100 miles.”
However, Kuntz is confident spent nuclear fuel will be safely shipped off site to a second planned Deep Geological Repository yet to be built.
