Poland’s energy ministry has signed an agreement with two state-owned companies, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) and Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), setting out responsibilities for construction of the country’s planned second nuclear power plant.
Under the terms of the agreement, PEJ will act as the investor and coordinate the project.
PGE, Poland’s largest power producer, will prepare preliminary feasibility studies and analyse potential locations for the plant.
A decision on selecting an international partner for the project will be made in 2027. The potential candidates include Westinghouse, EDF, and AtkinsRéalis.
Milosz Motyka, Poland’s energy minister, said: “This is an investment in our security, sovereignty, and economic development. Having our own stable energy sources strengthens Poland’s resilience to crises and reduces dependence on external suppliers.”
Construction of the plant is scheduled to start in 2032, with the reactor entering service in 2040.
