Ferdinand Marcos, President of the Philippines, has declared the country is in a state of “national energy emergency” as a result of the Iran War. He said that it poses “an imminent danger of a critically low energy supply.”
The state of emergency will last for one year.
Sharon Garin, Energy Secretary of the Philippines, has announced that the country will boost the output of its coal-fired power plants to keep electricity costs down as the war causes shortages of gas shipments. She said that with the cost of LNG soaring, the country would have to temporarily lean more heavily on coal.
She said that the Philippines would maximise the use of domestic coal, and that it was also increasing the purchases of coal from Indonesia. She said that Indonesia has given assurances that it would not place limits on coal orders.
