The Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder – a joint venture between SSE Thermal and Equinor – which aims to develop hydrogen production, storage, and power generation, has received planning approval.
The project will be located at the Aldbrough Gas Storage site in Yorkshire, UK, and will produce hydrogen via a 35 MW electrolyser powered by renewable electricity. The hydrogen will be stored in a salt cavern, then used to fire a 100% H2-fired turbine to send green power to the grid at periods of high demand.
Sally O’Brien, Senior Project Manager on the Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder Project, said: “Securing planning consent is a big step towards the UK’s low-carbon future. By integrating hydrogen production, storage, and power generation in the Humber region, we hope to create new opportunities for investment in the region, while advancing national clean power and decarbonisation goals.”
