Ontario has started work on a C$26.8 billion refurbishment of four reactors at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in Ontario, Canada. The Ontario provincial government said that the refurbishment will enable the plant to provide reliable electricity for an additional 38 years.

Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Energy Minister, said that the project will create about 30 000 jobs during construction and extend the life of Pickering’s four CANDU reactors by 38 years. He said that 90 per cent of the project spending would be in Ontario and Canada.

The refurbishment will involve replacing 1520 fuel channels and 48 boilers, as well as building a 1.5 km deep-water intake.

The four reactors will be taken offline later this month, with major refurbishment work due to start in January 2027. The refurbished units are expected to return to service in the mid-2030s.
