Darlington Nuclear has been granted a 20-year extension from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission , the longest term ever granted to a Canadian nuclear plant.
The Commission said in its report that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) “remains qualified to carry on the activities that the renewed licence will authorise.” There are no changes to OPG’s licensed activities under the renewed licence. The decision includes a requirement for OPG to provide two performance updates on its licensed activities and to continue its engagement with local First Nations throughout the licence period.
Darlington Nuclear Generating Station consists of four CANDU units with a total capacity of 3.5 GW. Units 1, 2, and 3 are currently operating while Unit 4 is undergoing refurbishment. The refurbishment is scheduled for completion in 2026.
