NuScale Power and Dairyland Power Cooperative have signed an MOU to evaluate potential deployment of NuScale’s small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology. Under the terms of the MOU, the two parties will explore NuScale’s SMR technology and support Dairyland’s due diligence process in evaluating affordable, reliable, and carbon-free energy solutions.
Dairyland is based in Wisconsin, USA, and is a generation and transmission cooperative for 24 distribution cooperatives and 17 municipal utilities across the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois.
NuScale said that its VOYGR power plants are able to perform load-following manoeuvres to meet grid capacity needs, which will support and facilitate the growth of intermittent renewables. NuScale also claimed that its technology was ideally suited for use at retired coal-fired power stations, supporting the transition to a decarbonised energy system.
Brent Ridge, President and CEO of Dairyland, said: “This agreement provides Dairyland an opportunity to explore this technology and evaluate whether it might be a viable long-term alternative to provide our members with safe, reliable, and cost-effective electricity in a lower carbon future.”
