The Nigerian government has unveiled a plan to construct modular solar power plants with a total combined capacity of 1900 MW across its 19 northern states to promote renewable power and reduce pressure on the national grid.
Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, announced that each state will host a 100 MW solar plant, enhancing energy independence and improving power supply reliability. He cited interest from private investors such as Sun Africa and Skipper Energy .
Adelabu referenced vandalism of key transmission lines that caused blackouts across 17 northern states in late 2024. In response, the governors of northern states demanded a diversified energy mix. Adelabu emphasised Nigeria’s solar power potential.
The Nigerian government is seeking private sector partnerships for the construction of new substations, transmission lines, and transformers, as the national grid – wholly owned by the government, faces funding constraints.
