Electricity generation at the 1670 MW Srisailam hydropower plant in Andhra Pradesh, India has stopped as water levels in the reservoir have fallen to critical levels, threatening supply across the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Both the right bank and left bank hydropower stations have been shutdown. The lack of rainfall in recent months and minimal inflows from upstream sources have contributed to the sharp decline in water levels.
With the plant not generating power, pressure on the electricity grid will increase. It’s likely that more thermal and imported power will be used, causing costs to increase. It is reported that there might be possible power shortages in the coming weeks as temperatures rise and demand increases as a result. Experts have said that if conditions do not improve, load management measures including power cuts may become necessary to balance supply and demand during the summer.
