Century Tokyo Leasing Corp and Kyocera Corp. are set to build the world's largest floating solar power plant, a joint statement released by both companies said.
The power plant, to be built in a reservoir in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo, will begin operating in March 2016. The companies will also be building two other floating power stations on reservoirs in Hyogo in western Japan, which will produce 1.7 MW and 1.2 MW of power.
The project in Chiba prefecture will see the installation of around 50 000 solar power generation modules installed on the surface of the water. The electricity generated at the plant will be sold to Tokyo Electric Power Co. for an estimated ¥450 million a year ($3.7 million).
According to Kyocera, the plant is set to generate 15 000 MW annually, which is enough to cover 5000 households each year.
