Kumho Engineering and Construction (Kumho E&C) has announced completion of the Gumi natural gas-fired power plant, the country’s first coal-to-gas fuel conversion project.

The project was ordered by Korea Western Power and built solely by Kumho E&C. It replaces the No 1 coal-fired unit at Taean with a CCGT under the government’s carbon neutrality policy. It is the first fuel conversion project of its kind in South Korea.

The 500 MW plant is located in the No 5 National Industrial Complex at Gumi HiTech Valley in North Gyeongsang Province. It is scheduled for completion by the end of September.

The 500 MW plant consists of one gas turbine, one steam turbine, and an HRSG.

Once the plant enters full operation, Gumi’s power self-sufficiency rate is expected to rise from 6 per cent to 30 per cent. The plant will support the development of a semiconductor cluster in Gumi HiTech Valley.
