The ESB has ended coal-fired generation 915 MW Moneypoint power station in County Clare, Ireland, after 40 years and earlier than planned, shifting to using oil instead.
Moneypoint was Ireland last operating coal-fired power plant, and this move makes Ireland the 15th country in Europe to have no coal-fired power generation.
ESB and EirGrid signed an agreement in 2023 to keep Moneypoint available to operate using oil from 2025 to 2029, only running when the electricity system is short of generating capacity.
