The Iraqi Ministry of Energy has signed an agreement with Siemens Energy to develop 14 GW of new gas-fired generation capacity in Iraq.
The agreement, which marks the third phase of Iraq’s energy partnership with Siemens, includes construction of CCGT facilities, which will primarily use locally sourced natural gas, including gas currently flared during oil production.
In addition, Iraq and Siemens Energy have signed agreements to renovate and upgrade the 340 MW Dibis power plant and rehabilitation of the 750 MW of exisiting units at the Al-Musayyib power plant, along with the addition of 150 MW at this plant.
At the end of 2023, Iraq had a total installed capacity of 32 GW, of which gas provided 66 per cent, oil 28 per cent, and hydro 6 per cent.
