Asgari said that the country has a proven thermal coal reserve of 500 million metric tons which it can use as feedstock for 30 years in 5 GW of power plant capacity. He added that Iran’s Energy Balance Roadmap has stipulated that the country should have 5.2 GW of coal-fired power plants by 2041.

Asgari made the remarks at the awarding of a contract for the construction of a 650 MW coal-fired plant in Tabas in the province of South Khorasan in eastern Iran, where 90 per cent of Iran’s coal reserves are located. The plant is scheduled to come on line by 2029.
