The Iranian government has announced that it is in discussions with Russia regarding the construction of new nuclear power plants.
Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran , said that all recent site inspections have been carried out with the approval of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Kamalvandi said: “Our technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency continues. All inspections in recent months were conducted with the approval of the Supreme National Security Council, covering activities in sectors of our nuclear industry that have not been targeted by any attacks.”
Kamalvandi said that one nuclear power plant is currently operational and two are under construction. Iran and Russia have signed contracts for four additional nuclear power plants, each with a 1200 MW capacity, in the Sirik region of southern Iran.
It has also been reported that Russia and Iran are jointly working on a cooperation protocol for SMRs.
