The carbon capture technology was supplied by the Indian subsidiary of UK-based Carbon Clean . The system is designed to capture 20 tonnes of CO2 per day from the plant’s flue gas. This is then hydrogenated using a catalyst and green hydrogen to produce methanol.

NTPC developed its own catalyst with assistance from the Indian Institute of Petroleum . According to test results, it can make methanol of 99+ per cent purity.
