India’s Nalgonda district to build 7500 MW power plant

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Telangana, announced plans today to develop a 7500 MW thermal power plant in Nalgonda district to ease power shortages and help development.

The project, part of a wider scheme to build a ‘mega-township’ in the area, will cost Rs. 53 000 crore ($9.8 billion), which is part of the state's aim to spend around Rs. 6 crore ($1.1 million) for each MW produced.

When finished, the ‘mega-township’ should provide accommodation for 20 000 people, a multi-speciality hospital and school, as well as create 30 000 new jobs.

The Chief Minister conducted an aerial survey of the available government land in Damarcherla Mandel and Mattampally Mandal district on Tuesday with the aim of highlighting the areas whereby more power stations can be constructed to eventually turn Telangana state into a power producer for other states in India.
