HD Hyundai Heavy will supply power generation units based on 9.6 MW HiMSEN gas engines. These medium-speed engines can respond rapidly to the fluctuating power demands of data centres.

The two companies said that they plan to expand cooperation beyond power engines into further follow-up projects.

The US Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) projects that data centres will triple its share of total US electricity consumption by 2030, rising from around 30 GW (6 per cent of the US total) to around 100 GW (19 per cent of the US total consumption) by 2030.

An official for HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said: “The continuous stream of collaboration inquiries in the data centre power engine market is proof that the HiMSEN engine’s technology and reliability have been validated. We will explore various business opportunities to expand our presence in the power equipment market.”
