Included within the plan are a series of upgrade projects and technological solutions, which should add 700 MW to the national grid in time for the summer months.
The total value of the contracts signed equates to $1 billion. Financing is already in place for the initial projects worth $328 million.
The president and CEO of General Electric’s Power Services business for the Middle East and North Africa, Azeez Mohammed, said: “The GE power-up plan for Iraq, launched under the patronage and guidance of the prime minister and the minister of electricity, with the support of the US embassy in Baghdad, is a unique initiative that underlines our strong commitment to Iraq where we have over four decades of partnerships in the power sector.”
GE has begun the shipment of parts for the projects at the power plants in Iraq. Technology upgrades include Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) conversions and hot gas path components.
At present, General Electric has over 130 turbines and has been operating in the country for 40 years.
