The 485 MW Long Ridge Energy Terminal natural gas power plant currently under construction in southeast Ohio will use hydrogen mixed with natural gas to lower the emissions profile of the plant. It will be one of the first generators in the USA to burn the fuel.

The plant was sanctioned by Fortress Transportation and Infrastructure (FTAI) early last year. In a collaboration with New Fortress Energy (NFE) and GE , it was agreed that the plant would use a gas turbine to burn 15-20 per cent hydrogen by volume in the gas stream.

Commercial operations are scheduled to start in November 2021. FTAI said Long Ridge could be the first purpose-built hydrogen-burning power plant in the USA. The GE H-class gas turbine has the capability to be adapted to burn 100 per cent hydrogen. Black & Veatch is assisting in developing plans to integrate hydrogen blending.

Wes Edens, CEO of NFE, said: “Long Ridge has many advantages in the pursuit of green hydrogen and zero-carbon power. This partnership allows us to get first-hand knowledge and experience of blending hydrogen and natural gas in GE turbines. Our singular focus has been to identify and support clean technologies that can eventually produce hydrogen at commercially attractive prices. As we continue to make progress in our efforts and advance proof of concept projects, this experience will bring tremendous value.”
