The Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) has announced that four coal-fired units in the Indian state of Punjab have been taken offline due to technical issues.
The units involved are one unit at Talwandi, two units at Goindwal, and one unit at Mohabbat power plants, resulting in a total power generation loss of 1410 MW, representing nearly 25 per cent of the total thermal power generation capacity of 5680 MW. This has come during a period of increased power demand during the summer period.
PSPCL said that the four units had “boiler and turbine issues”. A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “When thermal plants operate continuously at their full capacity, boiler issues are likely to happen.” He added that a heatwave leading to a surge in demand could make things “difficult”.
PSPCL said that it anticipates the units returning operation by 17 June.
