First Hydro Company, a 75:25 joint venture between ENGIE and the Canadian investor CDPQ , is carrying out a £1 billion refurbishment at the Dinorwig and Ffestiniog hydro pumped storage facilities in North Wales.
These two facilities have a combined capacity of 2.1 GW.
Ffestiniog is nearing the end of an 8-year refurbishment, and preparations have started for a 10-year refurbishment project at Dinorwig. This might involve the complete replacement of all six of its generating units. However, a final investment decision on the scope is still pending.
Ffestiniog’s upgrade has involved the rebuilding of all four units. Two have been completed and two are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
